An enduring appeal of horse imagery is that it can embody both powerful male and female symbolism. The horses depicted on the ceremonial caves of Paleolithic man suggest fertility and abundance, whereas the horse in Renaissance art, once equines were developed into tools for battle, became strongly male.
Once I began to consciously consider the horse as I have rendered it in my own work, I realized that I have mostly focused on the female side . . . (unsurprising given my personal interest in breeding.) So I decided to go back to a master few humans have surpassed in brilliance over the millennium, and study what he had to say on the subject. In rendering that subject in the style and with the essence I glean from his drawings, I feel I can (like with the Rock Art drawings), better understand his perspective through the act of recreating his images.
Leonardo DaVinci admired the horse’s ability to truly become an extension of man. He has drawn many comparisons of human and equine facial expressions that reflect this. His equine sketches are an amazing blend of the male/female power: rounded voluptuous shapes infused with bulging muscles and fierce expression. His horses training for war have the passion and intensity of any human warrior he portrayed.
DaVinci recognized the value of such a creature to the man of his culture . . . power driven, war oriented. And the horse appealed to the further enlargement of oneself with their regal, noble demeanor and presence.

456 lb.In this series I've tried to focus on individual personalities that I believe can be glimpsed best in moments of relaxed repose. Most often humans today experience wildlife at a distance and on the move. Animals, whether domesticated or wild, have a character as individual as humans, and sometimes reflect this character in their facial or body expressions. The capturing of a tell tale gesture or glance is what I find rewarding in these works.

“Congress finds and declares that wild free roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West; that they contribute to the diversity of the life forms within the Nation, and enrich the lives of American people…”
Public Law 92-195 12/15/71With Flowing tail and flying mane,
wide nostrils never
stretched by pain,
mouth bloodless to bit or rein,
And feet that iron never shod

Most of us are familiar with the Chinese Terra cotta
warrior horses from the Tang Dynasty period.
Instead, I choose for inspiration the equines found in
the Quig Dynasty paintings, since the style of horse
depicted was so sculptural; rounded shapes drawn with
multicolored horses of unusual and striking color and
pattern, possibly because they owned by nobility who
wished to be seen on eye catching steeds; the mounts
of Lords & Emperors.

One of the underrated pleasures of sculpture is that when it comes to making decisions about how to display a piece, this automatically engages the collector in a creative collaboration with the artist. Brood Band of the 6666 Ranch incorporates this concept by presenting a group of mares and foals that are not affixed to the base, allowing the collector to be the narrator of the overall piece by the way he arranges the horses and puts them into different relationships with each other. The idea underlying this presentation came from watching the constantly changing configuration of the brood band in my own pastures.

The inspiration for this sculpture comes out of a fundraising event we hosted at our ranch for a therapeutic riding program. We brought in a variety of equine models; from cowboys & Indians to Burros & vaqueros’ for artists to paint, draw, sculpt and photograph. One of the models was a nude seated bareback on one of my mares. For 5 hours the mare stood patiently as the nude model assumed various poses for the working artists. Moonlit is my expression of the unique experience.

One of the main actors found in Paleolithic "picture caves" are wooly ponies - grouped in ways that seem to have a special mystical function, and rendered with a fluency and grace of line that make them as alive as their counterparts in the light-world.“Mares at Play” is a miniature series of six Rock Art inspired ponies that reflect the playful possibilities if these equines materialized off their rock walls into three dimensions. They relate to one another in delightful expressive reactions.
“Rock Art Mare” the first of two enlargements has just been completed to lifesize and expresses an alert surprise . . . as if it has turned out from the rock wall surface to notice us for the first time.
Rock Art Roll the second enlargement of these mares; rolls on her back to enjoy the warmed earth dusting that generally maintaines the mare’s sleek coat.

In rock graphics depicted by Stone Age Man we find a legacy, which belongs to all mankind. They are found virtually on every continent. Some experts believe the animal imagery was done as a way of establishing a supernatural connection with the game early man hunted for his survival.

There is a timeless quality to much rock art that comes, in part, from the aesthetic sensibilities that created it. Many of the designs have a sophisticated sense of style and subtlety. Even with their archaic means and simplicity they often have a look that is modern yet primitive . . . and seems to emit an echo that resounds in our subconscious.
The caves of Lascaux, Font-du Gaume and Altamira comprises some of the oldest and most beautiful sketched imagery in human history. European authorities at first refused to believe that "primitive hands" could have rendered such artistry. What impresses me most is the reverence for the animals that comes through these renderings. These Rock Art sculptures are a tribute to those hands in three-dimension.

The ice age of Lascaux, Font-du Gaume and Altamira comprises some of the oldest and most beautiful sketched imagery in human history. European authorities at first refused to believe that “primitive hands” could have rendered such artistry. What impresses me most is the reverence for the animals that comes through these renderings. These Rock Art sculptures are a tribute to those hands in three-dimension.

There is a timeless quality to much rock art that comes, in part, from the aesthetic sensibilities that created it. Many of the designs have a sophisticated sense of style and subtlety. Even with their archaic means and simplicity the often have a look that is modern yet primitive . . . and seems to emit an echo that resounds in our subconscious.

In rock graphics depicted by Stone Age Man we find a legacy, which belongs to all mankind. They are found virtually on every continent. Some experts believe the animal imagery was done as a way of establishing a supernatural connection with the game early man hunted for his survival.

One of the main characters found in Paleolithic "picture caves" are wooly ponies - grouped in ways that seem to have a special mystical function, and rendered with a fluency and grace of line that make them as alive as their counterparts in the light-world.Photo credit Wendy McEahern
