My goal for this sculpture was to create a centerpiece for a large dining room table. It couldn't be too high, lest guests sitting opposite to one another have the sculpture block their view. And I wanted it to be interactive, so guests would be encouraged to pick them up and rearrange them, creating different dynamics between them. So I thought a bevy of hatchling water birds could allow for a variety of expressive personalities. As I began the sculpture, my friend came by the studio and said, "Oh, it's Make Way for the Ducklings!", and proceeded to tell me about the children's book about the true event involving a family of mallard ducks needing to cross a busy highway. A policemen stopped traffic, and the ducklings were given a police escort all the way to their destination; a park with a lake in the center of Boston. I was charmed by this story; therefore it seemed the appropriate title.

I had gone to the Wildlife Center in Espanola and another raptor rescue in Santa Fe. I was looking to research a Great Horned Owl for a sculpture subject, after having seen several in the National Forest while riding last year. However, my attention was drawn to a little owl with a quiet, yet intriguing presence. The owl's eyes had an amazing depth of circular reflections.....orbs within orbs. Tho I went home with every intention of starting a Great Horned Owl, what came out of my hands, as if independent of me, was this wise little spirit. The owl sits on a cottonwood branch that I found around our ranch.....notable because, though it had obviously died, had new buds growing from it.....the cycle of life....continuous renewal.
